Clementines or watermelons?

"Clementines or watermelons?", repeated the waitress. The girl who was ordering her desert had frozen. For a second, she had forgotten that she was ordering her desert. Two choices, simple. Not really... She wasn't thinking about her desert at all, but if she was going to have that surgery...

These days, plastic surgery seems to be the perfect solution for any body complex. In 2006, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there were more than 11,5 millions plastic surgeries in one year in United States only! However, one of the most popular one is the breast implants. How many women went under the knife in 2006? 383 885 American women. By seeing this statistic, the first question that pops in my head is why. Why would a women risk her life for a bigger chest? Many possibilities...

Success. In Hollywood, many stars believe that the key to glory and fame is to draw the attention of the papparazis on their chest. Did you know that a couple of years ago, an actress was turned down for the role of a superhero because her bra size wasn't big enough? What signal do the producers send to the young actresses? Get a boob job and you'll get the money? That's not what I call professionalism. An actress should be selected for her ability to play a role, not for her body. There are some exceptions, like if they're looking for a surfer, they can't pick a girl who's very thin and doesn't have any muscles, it wouldn't look real. If they're searching for a superhero, in what way will her chest influence her superpowers? Singers are also getting some surgeries to look "hot" and nearly naked in their clips, thinking that they will get more popular that way. Examples of who went under the knife? Madonna, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Ashlee Simpson, Jessica Simpson, Beyonce, Hilary Duff, Rihanna, Victoria Beckham, Brooke Hogan, Paris Hilton... Love. In movies, the guys always look at the girls with big breasts... Many girls with a smaller chest are afraid that they will be unlucky in love if they don't get a surgery, unfortunately. That's sad, because they are very lucky. They'll find a guy who loves them for what they really are, not for the size of their bra.

Confidence. Some girls believe that a bigger chest would make them more confident, because they would accept themselves. In my opinion, accepting yourself means accepting yourself how your really are. Most of the times, it shows if someone gets a boob job. People will talk about it and how not confident that person must be... Isn't that the opposite effect of what the girl desired?

Body image. The actual ideal perfect body for a woman is: tall, thin and large chest. There are only a few women who look like this... and sometimes they use surgery to reach that type of body. If a girl or a woman is thin, than normally her chest would be smaller. That's just how nature is. However, some women are really determined to reach the perfection and they're ready to go under the knife for it...

What's the risk? Like every surgery, there's a risk of complications and in the worst case, death. Dying to get a bigger pair of breasts, that's what would be written on the tomb of that girl? Is it worth it? Not at all. Losing your family, your friends, your life, for that? No way. Also, most of the times, it doesn't look natural... If a girl is naturally thin, than it will look like they stucked some grapefruits under her skin. It just won't look "right". Other times, there's a huge gap between the breasts, which doesn't look very nice too... Wrinkles, scars, one breast bigger than the other, those are just examples of complications. Also, I read in an article from a newspapers that if a person who has breasts implants has cancer, it's very difficult to tell, because the implants leave scars and other signs similar to breast cancer, which makes it harder to diagnose. Another inconvenient is that the woman needs to get some other implants or correction every ten years, approximately.

The lesson in this? Keep the watermelons for the restaurant... Clementines look much more natural and healthy on a woman's body!
